When you press Ctrl+S during an active Claude Code session, the interface switches to a stash buffer where you can compose your next prompt. Once Claude finishes its current task, the stashed prompt automatically gets submitted — no manual intervention needed. You don't lose your place, you don't interrupt the current operation, and you don't waste time waiting.

This isn't a new feature in the traditional announcement sense — it's been part of Claude Code's keyboard shortcuts for a while. But it's one of those capabilities that most users never discover because it doesn't appear in the main UI flow. This maps to a pattern that power users of terminal-based tools have known for decades. GNU Screen and tmux users queue commands. Git users compose their next operation while a rebase runs.   1. Start a task: Type your prompt and hit Enter. Claude begins processing.

  3. Compose your next instruction: Write whatever you need — a follow-up, a new task, a correction.
  4. Auto-submission: When Claude finishes the current task, your stashed prompt fires automatically.

The stash buffer is a simple text input — it supports the same markdown and formatting as a regular prompt. You can edit it freely while Claude works. If you change your mind, you can clear the stash before it submits.

A few practical patterns that work well with stashing:

Chained refactors: Ask Claude to extract a function, then stash a prompt to write tests for that function. The test prompt fires as soon as the extraction is done.

  5. Don't overload it: Stashing works best for natural two-step sequences. For complex multi-step workflows, use /batch instead.
