Claude Code Remote Control: Kick Off Tasks in Terminal, Control from Phone

Claude Code Remote decouples where you start work from where you manage it. Fire off a task in your terminal — a refactor, a test suite, a migration — then pick up your phone and approve diffs, answer clarifying questions, or redirect the agent mid-flight. The feature is rolling out now to Pro users and represents a meaningful shift in how developers interact with AI coding agents: the terminal becomes a launchpad, not a prison. For anyone who's ever walked away from a long-running Claude Code session and wished they could check in without returning to their laptop, this is the answer.

What Happened

Anthropic announced Claude Code Remote Control via their official @claudeai account, with rollout beginning for Pro plan subscribers. The feature connects Claude Code's CLI agent — running on your development machine or a remote server — to the Claude mobile and desktop apps, enabling asynchronous control across devices.

The workflow is straightforward: you initiate a Claude Code session in your terminal as usual, but now the session is accessible from the Claude app on iOS, macOS, or the web. From there, you can review what the agent is doing, respond to its questions, approve or reject proposed changes, and provide new instructions — all without touching the original terminal.

Early adopters have already started using it in production. @levelsio noted that he's editing production servers from his phone via Claude Remote, calling it "extremely nice" while acknowledging it's "a bit scary" — a fair summary of how powerful asynchronous agent control feels in practice.

This launch arrives alongside several other Claude Code updates in the same week: HTTP hooks for more secure integrations, new /simplify and /batch skills, and scheduled tasks in Cowork mode. Together, these features paint a picture of Claude Code evolving from a terminal tool into a full development platform.

Why It Matters

The bottleneck in AI-assisted coding has shifted. Model intelligence is no longer the primary constraint — developer attention is. A capable agent can refactor a module in minutes, but if it needs three approvals and two clarifications along the way, the developer is chained to their terminal for the entire session. Remote Control breaks that chain.

This matters most for long-running tasks. Database migrations, large refactors, multi-file test generation — these are jobs where the agent does 90% of the work autonomously but periodically needs human input. Previously, stepping away meant the session stalled. Now, those approval prompts arrive on your phone like messages, and you respond on your own schedule.

The competitive landscape is worth noting. Cursor operates as a desktop IDE extension — there's no mobile story. GitHub Copilot is tightly coupled to VS Code or JetBrains. Claude Code Remote is the first major AI coding tool to treat mobile as a first-class control surface, not just a notification channel.

For teams, the implications are practical. A senior engineer can kick off a task, hand off monitoring to a colleague, or review agent output during commute time. The development session becomes a shared, persistent artifact rather than something locked to one person's screen.

Technical Deep-Dive

Claude Code Remote works by establishing a persistent connection between the CLI agent process and Anthropic's cloud infrastructure. When you start a Claude Code session with remote access enabled, the session registers with your Anthropic account and becomes visible across authenticated clients.

The architecture separates execution from interaction. The agent continues running on its host machine — your laptop, a VPS, a CI runner — with full access to the local filesystem, git, and development tools. The remote client (phone or secondary computer) receives a synchronized view of the conversation: the agent's reasoning, proposed edits, questions, and tool calls. Your responses route back through the cloud to the running agent.

A few important constraints to understand:

  • The agent still runs locally. Remote Control doesn't move your code to the cloud. Your project files stay on the host machine; only the conversation state synchronizes.
  • Approval workflows are preserved. If you have Claude Code configured to require approval for file writes or bash commands, those gates still apply — they just surface on your remote device.
  • HTTP hooks integration. The recently launched HTTP hooks system works alongside Remote, meaning you can have external services react to agent actions while you monitor from mobile.

One limitation: network reliability matters. If the host machine loses connectivity, the agent pauses until the connection re-establishes. For long-running tasks on remote servers, stable network access is essential.

The feature pairs naturally with Claude Code's new scheduled tasks in Cowork mode. You can set up a recurring task — say, a morning code review or dependency audit — and handle the results from your phone when they're ready.

What You Should Do

  1. Upgrade to Pro if you're on a free plan and use Claude Code regularly. Remote Control is a Pro feature and justifies the cost for anyone running multi-step tasks.
  2. Start with low-risk tasks. Try monitoring a test suite run or a lint-fix session from your phone before trusting it with production deployments.
  3. Combine with approval gates. Keep Claude Code's permission system strict while you build confidence in the remote workflow. You can always loosen controls later.
  4. Set up a dedicated dev server. Remote Control is most powerful when the agent runs on a persistent machine — a VPS or always-on workstation — so sessions survive laptop sleep and reboots.
  5. Pair with HTTP hooks for notifications. Get a Slack or webhook ping when the agent hits a decision point, then jump into the Claude app to respond.
