Google is Alphabet's core subsidiary and one of the dominant forces in artificial intelligence research and deployment. Through its DeepMind research lab and the Gemini model family, Google builds foundation models, AI infrastructure (TPUs, Vertex AI), and consumer AI products integrated across Search, Workspace, and Android.

Why Google Matters

Google operates at every layer of the AI stack — from custom silicon (TPU v5e/v6) to foundation models (Gemini Ultra, Pro, Flash) to end-user products with billions of monthly users. When Google ships an AI feature, it reaches scale instantly through Search, Gmail, and Chrome.

For developers, Google Cloud's Vertex AI platform provides managed access to Gemini models alongside open-weight options. The company also open-sourced Gemma, a family of lightweight models built from Gemini research. Google's moves directly shape what Anthropic and other labs prioritize — competitive pressure from Gemini drove rapid improvements across the industry in multimodal reasoning and long-context handling.

How Google Works in AI

Google's AI efforts span three main arms:

  • DeepMind: Fundamental research lab responsible for AlphaFold, AlphaGo, and core Gemini model development. Merged with Google Brain in 2023
  • Gemini model family: Google's flagship multimodal models, available in Ultra, Pro, and Flash tiers with varying capability-cost tradeoffs. Natively handles text, images, audio, and video
  • AI infrastructure: Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) provide custom training and inference hardware, while Vertex AI offers the managed platform for deploying models at scale

Google also contributes foundational open-source tools like TensorFlow, JAX, and the Transformer architecture paper that underpins nearly all modern LLMs — including Claude.

  • Anthropic: AI safety company founded by former Google Brain researchers, building the Claude model family
  • Claude: Anthropic's flagship model and a direct competitor to Google's Gemini
  • Hugging Face: Open-source ML platform that hosts Google's Gemma models alongside thousands of community models
